Online retailers age check?

Does anyone know if online retailers like Play.com check your age when you buy stuff - if so how? Do they check with the bank or something?

Just wondering, if I could buy for example an 18 rated game off Play.com with my debit card.

Re: Online retailers age check?

I don't think they can verify age through CC processing.

Are you sure it's a game and not a movie? You know, the type Stuie's mother in law thinks he watches

Re: Online retailers age check?

Thats right Azz, THINKS I watch

As play accept debit cards i can't see how they can verify!

Surprised they get away with it to be honest. You'd think that online retailers should be audited on this sort of thing.

Haha, shush Azz nobody can know my plans xD nah I was thinking of when GTA 4 comes out actually :P

I was just thinking though, isn't it illegal to sell BBFC rated content to someone underage... so technically they're breaking the law?

Re: Online retailers age check?

Many places use owning a credit card as their age verification. I don't know of anything that they can do to verify age past that though. It's possible that they COULD do something though if a card is designated as a minor's subcard off another account or if it's a prepaid visa gift card. Some places filter those out.

Re: Online retailers age check?

Interesting topic, I have noticed a little message on Amazon, I think it was them at least, that says this title is rated blah blah it is an offense to purchase this title if you are under *insert age* There is however no system in place to stop it, I bought my GTA games online and I was underage at the time (20 now I think I was 17 when San Andreas came out). I suppose if Play.com and the likes stopped accepting Solo and Electron cards that would effectively end it, you have to be 18+ before you can get a Visa/Switch debit card don't you? Obviously if your using a credit card I think they are right in assuming your over 18 else it is fraud on the users behalf is it not?

Re: Online retailers age check?

Simple, anyone under the age of 18 should only be able to have a 'junior' debit credit card from the bank. When over 18 they get a full one. Retailers then don't accept junior cards..........and the kid steals their mums, damn.

Then they get put in jail for credit card fraud

Good idea Stu, have a junior debit card that get's promoted to a 'full one' at 18 - certainly sounds like a great idea
