Playstation Vita

I haven't seen much discussion of this console over here. Is anyone planning on getting it?

It should be worthwhile at least for fans of JRPGs and for fans of Uncharted. Persona 4, Disgaea 3, and a new Uncharted game all coming out for it.

Re: Playstation Vita

I think I'd need convincing on getting another handheld...I used my PSP for quite a while when I first got it, but then at the time all phones were pretty much monochrome (slight exaggeration)...however now my phone is all singing all dancing I can pass the time on my short commute of 30mins easily.

I like the PSVita...think it's really smart, but it's up against tablets and phones more so this time around and I wouldn't be surprised if it struggles to get traction.

Still I might pick one up when it's half the launch price

Re: Playstation Vita

You make mostly the same points that others on the net do. They really don't work for me though, I don't really care for using my phone for gaming... It's brought back the whole PalmOS gaming issue all over again.

1. Lack of buttons/physical controls. Everyone talks about how the touch screen is enough, but why then does it seem like the holy grail of phone/tablet gaming is adding a controller? That's because touch screens are a poor substitute for a controller for most games. It's OK as a suplement, but as a main method of controlling it leaves a lot to be desired. Even if they do add a controller, not all apps will support it.

2. Battery life. When playing a game, my phone dies in about the same amount of time as my PSP Go does. The difference? When my PSP Go dies, it's not really a big deal. When my phone battery dies I'm up a creek with no paddle... It's a huge deal and I have to scramble to find some place to plug it in.

3. The games have mostly been shallow, pale imitations of real games. There's a few exceptions, but it's kind of like amateur night on Kongregate.

4. Vendor lock-in is way, way higher with phones. You're not likely to have more than one, you may not even get to pick what phone you have. For a long time, I was stuck with Blackberry because that's what my work gave me. Now I'm stuck with Android because that's what my work gave me. Even if your job doesn't mandate a certain OS, you still can only play a subset of all of the games on the market. Having both systems means paying an additional monthly fee to a cell provider... And that fee is likely 6-7 times as much per year as Xbox Live Gold.

5. Tablets don't have the vendor lock-in to the same extent, but they cost twice as much as a PS Vita and are difficult to carry around, and have most of the same problems as phones with controls.

6. Phone OSes aren't made for gaming. While most of them can resume the game after a call, many of them will end the game and not save it if you accidentally hit the Home button, or if you try to leave it to go send a text message, etc.

7. When I find out I only have my phone and I have downtime, I usually just pull up Aldiko and read a book... None of the games are really compelling enough.

8. For a comparison of quality between the games on the systems, a big RPG for the Android platfrom is Spectral Souls: Resurrection of the Ethereal Empires. It's a Port of a PSP game that has a metacritic score of 47/100. Its score on the Android marketplace? 4.5/5. I've played both versions, and the only difference is that the android one is higher resolution to match the screen. That kind of score disparity doesn't happen unless people's expectations are extremely low on android.

For me, I don't really have a commute where I can sit and play games. My portable gaming is mostly done in three places. When I'm out at a store or a some other place where I'm waiting for someone else, when I'm on a long airplane ride for work, or when I'm in bed trying to get to sleep. Touch controls definitely don't work for the last situation as they're far too active and would keep my wife awake.

Re: Playstation Vita

I agree with all your points Kaz, and if my commute was longer then I'd be extremely tempted. When gaming at home it's my PS3 all the way. I'm definitely more interested in the PS4 etc.

I carry my phone charger by default these days, I wish battery life could be improved drastically.

Re: Playstation Vita

Yeah, though Sony's acting like they're not going to show the PS4 at all this year.

I imagine they have some prototypes built, and have some samples at certain developers as a hedge though against MS. They don't want a repeat of last time, so they're going to have something ready to go when MS announces their next console, and a solid library ready to go with it for it when the time comes.

At this point it's a matter of which side is the first to jump... Both of them have irons in the fire and are watching each other to see who takes the plunge first.

Re: Playstation Vita

I pre-ordered one today. I went with the 3G version as I get free data from work anyway.

Can't wait to be honest! Looks fantastic. Uncharted Golden Abyss is the game I'm getting with my pre-order.

Have you played the demo for Uncharted GA yet? They had a Vita at the local gamestop with it. I decided to hold off until it's cheaper because that $50 price tag is a little steep. Maybe it was because they had the console muted at the store, but the demo was a bit on the annoying side with not really explaining certain things to you. I got stuck twice because I didn't know there was some new mechanic that I needed to continue.
