Re: Best TV for gaming/PS4?

Well I went to Currys to have a look and the 42" are the perfect size. So it's between the 42W6 or 42W8.

They had a 42W6 there and I was very impressed - black levels were excellent as well.
They only had a 46W8 which was also really nice, but I'd like to see the 42".

Also demoed some Samsung 3DTV's and I actually really like 3D now!! Are the instore demos different from actual movies? I looked at a 3D film at my mums house when they first got a 3D tele and I didn't really see much '3D' so was left thinking it was crap, but these (perhaps newer models) in the shop were pretty good - especially the active one. (Passive ones had horizontal lines which reminded me of holograms.)

Oh PS the huge W9 on demo was stunning - Smak, you should check it out before committing to a plasma...

There is a reason why the plasmas are the only TV's to receive reference level awards at hdtvtest.co.uk

Re: Best TV for gaming/PS4?

I am not convinced by plasma tbh, while I think they are great for movies, I'm not so sure about games or computers because of burn-in and lifetime (and power consumption).

I am edging towards the 42W8, the W9 is great but it's only 40" and I think the extra 2" makes quite a bit of difference.

Re: Best TV for gaming/PS4?

What about a bigger W9? Or is that way over budget? The black levels on the W8 (0.13cd/m2) really let it down imo, my 5 year old Sony W4000 (0.05cd/m2) has better black levels!!

Regards Plasmas, image retention is thing of the past and has been for quite a while, I know professionals who even use plasmas for photo editing lol! Power consumption is going to be higher for sure, but for a extra 30 per year I'd rather have much better picture quality and motion handling, at the end of the day it's all about the picture!!

Re: Best TV for gaming/PS4?

Are you sure about those black levels Leigh - maybe the review was a bit over critical. They were very good in the store, *much* better than my old Samsung (and even my high end 30" Dell monitor) definitely suggest going to check them out in perosn. I didn't get time to look too much at the Plasma's though - will have to go back and have another look sometime.

Image retention with Plasmas is still an issue according to those reviews, I'm not sure they could easily get around it because it's to do with the fundamentals of the technology. Also lifespan - is it still the same for Plasmas?

The next size up on the W9 is 46" and it's just a bit too big tbh, plus I don't really want to spend that much - I want that log burner lol.

Re: Best TV for gaming/PS4?

The black levels are low for W8 because it uses a IPS panel instead of VA panel (and not because a review site is being over critical lol). The results are documented in the very comprehensive hdtvtest review, including those for my ageing W4000 lol. If your happy after viewing then go for it

IR is not really issue any more with newer plasmas, especially after initial run in.The technology has evolved with faster and more efficient phosphors making IR much harder. Nothing a screen saver wouldn't prevent if you wanted to be safe if using with a PC like myself.

The biggest issue I have with LCD is not the black levels or contrast but the motion blur! I can't stand all the bs frame interpolation techniques used to try and overcome the issue that produce inaccurate and unnatural motion and introduce artefacts to the image. Turn this off and your left with just 300 lines of motion vs full 1080 natively achieved with plasmas, this was what did it for me when I viewed the GT60, the difference to me was night and day compared to any LCD. Then you have natively inky blacks, extremely high contrast ratio and much more natural colours. Again there is a reason why the GT60 receives reference levels awards and TV of the year

Have you considered and other LCD other than Sony, what about Panasonic? I'd need to read up myself but I'm sure they get rave reviews too.

Re: Best TV for gaming/PS4?

Perhaps their testing was with image processing off or something, but I like to see things for myself than rely on website reviews because often they get things wrong. Is the difference really that noticeable in person?

Your W4000 may well be an IPS panel as well, and may well offer better blacks on paper - but in the grand scheme of things I guess the PQ, overall, is much better on the W8.

It boils down to taste I guess, there is a sharpness and colour depth to LCDs that I like, plasmas often appear 'shiny/glossy' - but like I said I need to look into them more. I haven't ruled them out, but image retention and product life is a concern, it may have improved but it is still an issue.

Of course the other reason is input lag - the Sony LCDs are leaders in this regard, and as this will be mainly a gaming and computer screen, I would prefer lower input lag.

If you are happy with a Plasma, cool, I don't think it is for me but I will still check them out out of curiosity if nothing else

I haven't looked at any Panny LCDs... they don't seem to get mentioned much for gaming. Which models did you have in mind? (42")
