Re: xBox Next News

mid-range? More like last gen low-end. Next gen consoles are looking weak, hopefully Sony will bang a decent Nvidia GPU in the PS4.

I was thinking it'd be in the 60-75% of 5870 range... It looks more like 25-40% of a 5870.
Yeah it's a lame GPU, I appreciate in a closed system it will perform better but honestly that thing belongs in a HTPC at best

Re: xBox Next News

Well, it is current generation, they've just changed their numbering scheme this gen, so that would put it in lower mid-range...

The interesting thing about the 5000 vs 6000 in ATI cards is that a 5870 and a 6870 are about the same speed, the latter just uses a bit less power. The same last 3 digits seems to give about the same performance as the last gen...

Hah. Putting it in a HTPC would be a waste of resources... When you can run an HTPC off a $35 all-in-one computer now. http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/571

I'm pretty sure this means that Microsoft has joined Nintendo in targetting the casual audience more than the hardcare audience though. $250 Xbox?

Actually, the whole thing makes me think of the book "Little Brother" by Cory Doctrow. In that, they talk about this microsoft released console that they essentially gave away for free hoping to make it back in software sales.

Re: xBox Next News

Ah, I hadn't heard that the 7000's had been released yet.

What would you think about the PS4 using a 460 or 560 level card?

Either of them would be better than the 6670, and they could probably be fitted into a $400 console. (I had heard that Sony was thinking about jumping ship to ATI though.)

Re: xBox Next News

I think a GTX 560 would rock in a closed platform. My lad has a GTX 560 SOC @1Ghz and it handles most games on high settings @1080p. If they did a 28nm version I'm sure they could clock it even higher and still stay within power/temps limits.

Re: xBox Next News

I'm still thinking that MS may be working with ATI on a fusion chip. Multicore PowerPC with a 6670 on the same die... They've only done up to 6550's so far though.

Another log on the "no optical drive" fire.

The memory card thing is interesting. I heard someone say they'd do sales at places like Gamestop by making a little kiosk you plug a USB drive into, and they copy the game over to it there. Wild rumors and speculation I think...
