As long as it's quiet than my aging 60gig model that was a refurb from launch I don't care how big the heat sink is!

Re: PS4 News

Yeah, it's too bad the 40gig had such an awful fan setup. At least the newest version is whisper quiet again.

Orbis = PS4?

Re: PS4 News

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/17561795

Quote:
Rumours about Sony's newest PlayStation console have been leaked online.

A US news site says they've spoken to a source who says that the PS4 will be called Orbis and will hit the shops in winter 2013.

It's thought that the latest console will be able to work with Playstation's Vita - much like the tablet pad that's set to become part of Nintendo's Wii U.

Another rumour is that you won't be able to share the games with other consoles, or sell them second-hand.

This is because new games will be 'locked' to one PlayStation account. You also won't be able to play PS3 games on it as it won't be "backwards-compatible".

Sony haven't confirmed anything, but the rumours have been picked up by the official PlayStation magazine too, which might suggest there's an element of truth about them.

We'll be keeping our ears to the ground to bring you any more info when we hear it!

Oooooh

Re: PS4 News

I hope they don't call it Orbis Stick with the Playstation brand and just call it PS4. (Apparently 4 is unlucky in Japan.)

How can they lock games to one unit - and won't that break lots of laws (and p off a lot of customers who like selling old games.) Surely they're shooting themselves in the foot with that one... unless this is just the Anti-Sony propaganda at work again?

Re: PS4 News

It's pretty certain they aren't going to call it the PS4 for the reasons you stated. 4 and "Death" sound very similar in Japan.

But some people have stated that Orbis Vitae means "Circle of Life" which is something that I wouldn't put past Sony as a marketing gimmick.

This is the second time this has come up, it came up shortly before the release of the PS3. Apparently Sony has a patent on technology to put a small magnetic strip on the disc that can be read and written, but I figured they had stuck that back on the shelf and forgotten about it. Maybe they could embed a smart card chip into the disc hub itself?

Rumors are, they're going to use it as an extension to their $10 online pass deal. You get a used copy of the game, and it loads up in demo mode until you pay $10 to Sony to reset that copy to your account. Alternately, if they decide to do online activation, they could bake a distinct code into each disc. The downside being that the first time you play a game, you'll have to be online.

I've always thought that they could work out a deal with places like Gamestop that when they sold used games, they could reactivate them and give Sony a cut of the used game sales, and that might keep the game companies in business while still allowing people to sell their games.

The biggest problem with all of this is that gamers lending their copies to friends would be much harder.

Kotaku is reporting a few details from the successor to the PS3...particularly the name and a few of the specs.
While the official reveal of Sony's next home console could still be months away, if not longer, Kotaku has today learned some important details concerning the PlayStation 3's successor.

For one, the console's name or at least its codename/working title is apparently Orbis. And it's being planned for release in time for the 2013 holiday season.

The details in this story come from a reliable source who is not authorized to talk publicly about next-gen hardware but has shared correct information with us before. What they're telling us in specifics matches much of what we've heard and reported in generalities in recent weeks.

Our main source supplied some basic specs for the console, but as the future is always in motion, bear in mind these could easily change between now and the Orbis' retail release. Still, if you'd like to know what developers are being told to plan for now, here you go.

AMD x64 CPU
AMD Southern Islands GPU
The former, that's largely something we've heard before, but the latter is interesting. That's the name given to many of AMD's 2012 roster of high-end PC cards. The PS4's GPU in particular, we're told, will be capable of displaying Orbis games at a resolution of up to 4096x2160, which is far in excess of the needs of most current HDTV sets. It'll also be capable of playing 3D games in 1080p (the PS3 could only safely manage 3D at 720p).

Seems like a huge PITA tbh - reckon it would alienate way too many people, games are expensive enough as it is. Drop them to £10 a game then yeah, but at £40 a game - it's just rude.

Re: PS4 News

Sony’s PlayStation 4 to support 4K resolution

Quote:
Sony’s (SNY) plan to introduce an 80-inch XBR LED television set with 4K resolution is said to be the start of a larger scheme to push 4K on consumers, much like 3D was a huge push in the industry a couple of years ago. Since 3D isn’t gaining much traction, Sony (and we’d assume the rest of the industry) is betting on 4K as a way to get consumers to upgrade their home entertainment devices. Sony is already selling 4K Blu-ray players for $200, and the company’s next-generation PlayStation 4 will indeed support 4K resolution playback as well, a source tells us. Like the PlayStation 3 did with Blu-ray, Sony is betting that by including the ability to support 4K resolution media — games and movies — consumers will have an incentive to upgrade to new 4K television sets.

Re: PS4 News

It makes me a little sad that they're trying to push up to another resolution instead of consolidating on the resolution they have. I imagine that only a handful of indie and smaller titles will be running on 4k, while the majority of games will be 1080p...

Well, that was going to be true regardless. The chipset that its rumored to use is a bit of a monster, 1080p is simple for it.

Most of the GPUs in this family are pretty monstrous when compared to current consoles, and one of them will be in the PS4 if rumors are to be believed. The question is which one between the 7670 and 7970 will be used. 7670 will be solid at 1080p, but not fantastic. 7970 would be able to handle 4k as well as the PS3 can handle 1080p, maybe a bit better.

the 7670 is 25% the speed of the 7970.

I'm hoping they use at least a 7870, which is about 65% of the speed of the 7970. It seems like a chip that could reasonably be shrunk down and put into a stack of chips.

Re: PS4 News

Thanks Kaz - I hope they go with at least the 7970 to future proof it somewhat against the PCs
