Re: Best TV for gaming/PS4?

I am thinking about the w653 again: http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/sony-...1308113237.htm

Quote:
Sony’s 2013 Bravias have proven to be superb gaming TVs, and the W65 is no exception. With [Scene Select] set to “Game“, the 42W653A effortlessly smashed through our existing input lag record (held by another Sony – the W8), posting a jaw-dropping figure of 14.6ms on the Leo Bodnar lag tester. Engaging [LED Motion Mode] – should you wish to do so – barely increased the lag by a mere 6ms to 20.5ms which is an excellent level of responsiveness no other non-Sony HDTVs have been capable of matching to date. Add full 4:4:4 reproduction (in [Game] and [Graphics] mode) to the equation, and we’re convinced you won’t find a better flat-screen television on which to play video games at the moment.

Re: Best TV for gaming/PS4?

Ok my shortlist so far:

42W653 - £483 (totaldigital) £529 (Richersounds & JohnLewis) review
42W805 - £637 (totaldigital & electronicempire) £649 (Richersounds) £699 (JohnLewis) review
50W656 - £699 (totaldigital) £749 (Richersounds) £849 (JohnLewis)

What do you guys think?

The first two have excellent input lag/reviews. The 807a is 3D, not sure if I'd use it, but guess it's handy to have. Think it's my fave so far - it is in a higher class and has better motionflow at 400hz.
The last one benefits from being bigger tho, I'm not sure I want that big anyway (not 3d either)

On the 805a:

Quote:
For us, if there’s one overwhelming reason to buy the Sony W8, it must be for its unrivalled suitability for video gaming. With [Game Mode] enabled, our KDL47W805A sample not only registered the lowest input lag we have on record, but also was capable of 4:4:4 chroma reproduction. And unlike plasmas, there’s absolutely no risk of image retention or permanent screenburn. Sony has been on a roll with brilliant gaming displays from its 2013 Bravia TV range, and this will surely go down a treat with all gamers including future owners of the Japanese manufacturer’s next-generation PlayStation 4 (PS4) console.

Yeah sorry prices were from the time of review, must of dropped quite a bit since release in May for the Sony. Still shows black's are far superior on any plasma at any price point vs LCD. And plasma don't require inaccurate, artefact inducing frame interpolation to achieve 1080 (vs 300 for LCD) motion resolution.

Quote:
native black level on the W8 measured 0.13 cd/m2 both on a full-field video black screen (with a pause icon displayed from our Blu-ray player to defeat the auto-dimming) and ANSI checkerboard pattern. For comparison’s sake, this year’s LED TVs using VA-type LCD panels (including Sony’s own W9 series) are capable of 0.05 cd/m2 blacks; and Panasonic’s industry-leading plasmas can go below 0.01 cd/m2. In other words, the Bravia KDL-47W805A’s black level was mediocre.
I'd go for the W9 over the W8 at that price, the W9 uses a VA panel which offers much better blacks.

The only thing putting me off the GT60 is the 4:4:4 reproduction on PC which Sony have no problem with, otherwise the GT60 smashes the W9 in all other department hence the reference award over the Sony. It's impossible to get a side by side viewing of each set connected to a PC source to compare.

TV buying is never easy lol!

Ok, they haven't really have they, so much for using LEDs as a back light!

Still to achieve that the plasma uses 3x as much power!

Sony LCD = 64watts
Panny Plasma = 179watts or more!

And I agree that buying a TV is never easy!

No too fussed about the extra power draw tbh, my PC probably draws about 500+ under full load lol. It's all about the picture quality at the end of the day and the plasma beats the LCD in pretty much every department. Yeah the Sony's have better input lag but that's negligible when the GT60 is as low as 23ms anyway. It's the 4:4:4 reproduction that's bothering me as I will be mainly using for PC gaming. The W9 has defiantly been on my radar and is my 2nd choice.

I might just wait for OLED to become affordable!

You might be waiting a long time

Jotch, that's good to know re power consumption - I would prefer something more echo friendly.

Re blacks, I am not too bothered, they are only really an issue in dark films/horrors... and I don't watch many of those lol

Re: Best TV for gaming/PS4?

Maybe my monitor is different as I use it to watch all my blu rays, but I only ever notice the black issue in dark scenes.

And the 32" Samsung is so small and so far away you can see jack shit

Re: Best TV for gaming/PS4?

Cheapest W9 is £949... I don't want to spend that much - I want to get a log burner for the lounge as well.

I might go with the W653 'The best gaming TV', as that's going to be it's main use.
