Games including 'online code' in manuals?

Heard recently that some games (such as StarHawk) are now including a code that gives you access to multiplayer online. Wonder why?

Is it to stop the resale of games?
Or only for games that install on the HD?

Re: Games including 'online code' in manuals?

EA have been doing this for a while...if you bought the game 2nd hand you have to get in touch with them and buy the online access code...about 5 or so maybe less - it's usually on the PSStore to puchase as well.

I guess it helps keep the servers running etc and assist with the related costs.

It's to profit from resales...

That way they can monetize the second, third, etc user to buy the game.

Over here, it's usually $10 to buy it for a used copy.

That makes the $5 off used copies at the store very unappealing.

I didn't know it was going on. Understandable if the game installs onto a hard disk but otherwise, I'm not so sure.

How does it effect you guys who buy and sell games?

Re: Games including 'online code' in manuals?

Well, the prices for brand new games traded in dropped a little, but I barely ever trade those in anyway. In California, Gamestop was sued for selling games at only $5 below retail, but not disclosing the $10 value loss from the code.

I don't buy used games unless it's out of stock new everywhere, and in those cases I probably wouldn't mind the $10 extra cost.

I don't trade my games in unless I have far too many on my really long shelf

I buy 2nd hand games occasionally, but have never needed to buy an online pass...yet.

Heh, I trade them in when I either get disgusted with them, or I platinum them.

Hah. Bigger than my shelf. It's maybe 4 ft high and 4 ft wide. Once games become too old to trade into the local stores, they go into binders instead. I have a massive binder full of Xbox, PS1, and PS2 games.
